Abstract
Personal involvement in laboratory and field work is one of the most effective means by which students can become part of the dynamic world of scientific endeavor. Passive observation of films and demonstrations, though of considerable educational merit, does not involve the student as an active learner dealing with the intellectual and technical challenges of real situations. The studies proposed in this manual range from brief exercises, several of which can be accomplished in the standard two-to three-hour laboratory period, to extended projects requiring days or weeks for completion.
