Abstract
    This paper summarizes and brings up to date a series of papers describing the plankton of the northwestern North Sea in relation to the environment and distribution of herring. The plankton data used are based on samples collected by the herring fishermen, supplemented at times by sampling from the research ships of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland.
