| Abstract |
Clusters of structurally related biologically active peptides hava been appropriately dubbed 'families' or 'superfamilies'. However, structural resemblance does not necessary predict similar function. This short overview deals with two couples of peptides: insulin and insulin-like growth factor- I (IGF-I)belonging to the insulin superfamily, and glucagon and glucagon-like peptide I (GPL-I) belonging to the glucagon superfamily. An attempt is made to compare structure, expression and function of peptides of either fish or mammalian origin. It appears that fish insulin, IGF-I and glucagon share with their mammalian counterparts a number of similar features and functions while glucagon-like peptide function is stongly different. Insulin and glucagon families of peptides have been extensively reveiwed during the past two years. To avoid repetition most attention is payed to the latest findings that have not been included in previous reviews. |
