Abstract
A general account and the station list of a continental shelf benthos survey carried out around New Zealand by the New Zealand Oceanographic Institute are given. Distribution of the Echinoidea in the New Zealand region is described. Faunal elements having restricted, semi-restricted, and widespread geographic distributions are recognised. A group of species restricted to the shelf can be recognised, as can the sediment preference of a number of species. The echinoid distributions are compared with the faunal provinces erected on molluscan evidence, and substantial differences are apparent.
