Abstract
Swimming activity and oxygen consumption of the semipelagic two-spotted goby (Gobiusculus flavescens) and the epibenthic sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) were investigated in the laboratory under the same light regime. Illuminance was modulated continuously between more than 100 lx (noon) and less than 1 lx at night (2030–0330 h). Under this light regime, Gobiusculus flavescens exhibited a diurnal and Pomatoschistus minutus a nocturnal rhythm in swimming activity and respiration rate. It is suggested that timing of activity is closely coupled with foraging behaviour in the planktivorous Gobiusculus flavescens, but less in the benthivorous Pomatoschistus minutus.
