Abstract
A new genus, Monopenchelys, is proposed for Uropterygius acutus Parr 1930, previously known from the western Atlantic Ocean and here recorded from Hawaii and the western Indian Ocean. Monopenchelys is distinguished from other morays by its single branchial pore, dorsal-fin origin well behind a vertical through anus, low gill opening, slender pointed dentition, and small adult size. The relationship of Monopenchelys to other species previously placed in the invalid genus Rabula is discussed. The type species is redescribed.
