Abstract
A common small moray that ranges from Florida and the Bahamas to Brazil (and possibly West Africa) has no name and is here described, named and illustrated. The species is readily distinguished from other West Atlantic morays by its coloration (chestnut-brown with cephalic lateral-line pores each set in a white spot), its strongly arched jaws that expose most of the dentition even when the mouth is closed, and the origin of the dorsal fin which is above or just before the gill opening. Variation in number of vertebrae is given for 322 specimens from over the range of the species. Comparisons are made with other species.
