Abstract
The Vertiginidae in Poland are represented by 10 species (and 2 likely to be found) of Vertigo 0.F. MÜLLER 1774, 3 species of Truncatellina LOWE, 1852 and 3 species of Columella WESTERLUND, 1878. All the taxa are presented in detail with synonymy, descriptions of shells and genitalia, notes on ecology, distribution and variability. Shell characters are suitable for diagnostic purposes; characters of the shell, genitalia and nervous system - for phylogenetic considerations. The monotypic Vertigininae FITZINGER, 1833 are more plesiomorphous than the Truncatellininae STEENBERG, 1925, of which Columella is more apomorphous than Truncatellina. The following zoogeographic groups have been recognized: species inhabiting the whole area (widely distributed in Europe/World}, species having isolated lowland localities (mostly Mediterranean and North-European), species found at high altitudes in the mountains (Arctic-Alpine) and essentially montane species with a few lowland localities (Boreo-Alpine). A determination key is provided. Habitat preferences, growth, maturity, reproduction and variability patterns of apertural barriers are discussed.
