Abstract
Since first reported from the Thames Estuary in 1859, Potamopyrgus jenkinsi has spread widely through European watercourses. This spread is briefly reviewed. Field and laboratory experiments are described which show that P. jenkinsi orientates upstream and it is suggested that this could result from mechanical forces of the water turning the shell. It is shown that P. jenkinsi can survive a six hour passage through the gut of a trout and produce live young shortly afterwards. The implications of these dispersal methods are discussed.
