Abstract
This study critically examines the implementation of ecotourism in the Azores Archipelago over the past decade (2015–2025). Due to the impossibility of conducting fieldwork at the time of writing, the research relies on secondary sources (books, chapters, articles, and regulations). It assesses the extent to which the institutional discourse and current tourism practices align with the theoretical principles of ecotourism, through the analysis of regional tourism plans and other relevant documents. The findings reveal a partial alignment with the ecotourism model: although there are efforts to incorporate sustainability into planning, contradictions persist between institutional discourse and the actual dynamics of tourism. This dissonance is marked by spatial overcrowding, landscape idealization, cultural authenticity loss, and limited community participation. In conclusion, sustainability in the Azores becomes a tool of territorial marketing used to support a strategy of economic growth.
