Abstract
The paleae setae of Petta pusilla (Polychaeta, Amphictenidae) were investigated by means of cytology, histochemistry and microanalysis. The bundle of hollow chitinous tubes which makes them up from the chaetoblast microvilli is obturated in the cortical area by a protein, rich in halogenated tyrosin (Br and I). The bromin content is more constant than the iodine one, which increases to the point. The thick external paleae are consolidated (mainly on their external side) by this matter, implicated probably in a tanning process, more than the calcium rich first ones to appear, the cation being next located at the basis and external side of setae. Low levels of iron are present.
