Normalized biomasses as proposed by Platt & Denman (1978), decrease linearly with organism size, in sea or lake pelagic ecosystems at steady state (Sprules et al., 1988). In a northern Mediterranean lagoon (Étang de Thau), winter zooplankton biomasses, estimated by image analysis, show important fluctuations in every size class. Their averaged size-spectra were characterized by an increasing phase which grouped most of the individuals, and by a decreasing phase linked with less numerous organisms of large size. Size-structure differed from one lagoon area to another, following a gradient of density and of composition. Such structures characterize interface ecosystems where environmental conditions are forcing parameters. |
