Abstract
    The occurrence of Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus distichus subsp. edentatus, F. spiralis, F. Serratus, and F. Vesiculosus in the inner part of Oslofjord has been recorded by investigating 120 localities. The distribution of these algae has varied during the last decades. This is discussed with respect to different environmental factors, including pollution. Fucus vesiculosus, F. Serratus, and Ascophyllum nodosum have disappeared in the intermost part of the fjord during the last decades. F. Spiralis, however, has become more common in this area during the same period of time. F. Distichus subsp. edentatus, which is by far the most common brown alga in the inner Oslofjofrd today, was not recorded in any part of the fjord in 1893-94. The suggestion is made that the increasesed discharge of sewage to the inner fjord has changed the competitive balance between the fucoids and the ephemeral green algae.
