| Abstract |
The first species list of the Red Sea dates back to Issel, 1869. He listed a total of 573 Recent molluscs and an additional 74 fossil species, based on older Iiterature references as well as on material collected and stored in (ltalian) museums. Michael Mastaller [1979] published a rather uncritical species list in which many mistakes and omissions are present. This list was published in an edited form by Peter Vine [1986]. In recent times some groups of Red Sea molluscs have been revised: the Bivalvia by Graham Oliver [1992], and the Polyplacophora by Hermann Strack [1993]. The most abundant group in number of species from the Red Sea, the Gastropoda, was never dealt with, although a number of families were revised. The book Red Sea Shells" by Doreen Sharabati [1984] is by far the most useful book as a start for the Red Sea shell collector. |
