Abstract
An SEM study of the en face view of four Desmoscolex (Desmoscolex) species, (D. (D.) granulatus, D. (D.) membranosus, D. (D.) parvospiculatus from Papua New Guinea and D. (D.) brevisetosus from The Great Barrier Reef), and one unidentified Tricoma species from Papua New Guinea revealed different types of lip region structure than known hitherto. The three Desmoscolex species from Papua New Guinea lack cephalic tubercles, structures that were previously considered as synapomorphies for species of the genus Desmoscolex. A new species, Desmoscolex (Desmoscolex) parvospiculatus, is described from Papua New Guinea. It is characterized by its short body with 18 main rings, a typical desmoscolecoid pattern of setae, setae, a short end ring, the presence of an anterior concentration of pigment granules, a lip region pattern with a low oral rim provided with three cuticular protrusions, and short straight spicules in males. Additional data are given for D. (D.) membranosus.
