Abstract | A 3D operational hydrodynamic model of the Baltic Sea (M3D_UG), based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was used to forecast storm surges in the Oder Estuary. Because of wind-driven back-up in the Oder mouth, a simplified operational model of river discharge was additionally developed, based on water budget in a stream channel. Linking the Oder discharge model with the Baltic Sea model into a single system made it possible to simulate hydrographic conditions in the Szczecin Lagoon and in the Pomeranian Bay. As the model adequately approximates the changes of water level in case of passages of deep low-pressure systems over the Baltic, it can be regarded as a reliable tool for storm surges forecasting. |
