Abstract
This edition of the International Directory of Marine Scientists is a revised and updated version of the first Directory published by FAO in 1970. Its co-sponsors, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), have attempted to improve it by including a larger sector of the marine science community, and by making some changes in format, which are explained in the Introduction. Updating of the computerized register from which the Directory is derived began immediately after the first edition was issued. The persons and institutions already included in the register collaborated with FAO by transmitting addenda and errata to the first edition. In march 1976 letters were sent from the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) to its national committees, and from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) to national contacts for training, education and mutual assistance in the marine sciences, requesting the submission of an up-to-date list of marine scientists in each country. The information received from the Member States via IOC and SCOR was added to the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System (AFSIS) Expert Register in a machine-readable form. Printouts from the augmented data base were presented to participants at the Joint Oceanographic Assembly and SCOR General Meeting in Edinburgh, September 1976, for futher verification. In February 1977 reminders were sent out to those countries thet had not yet responded to previous letters, inviting their input for the Directory. Information received from countries replying up to 15 July 1977 is included in the data base. Additional submissions reaching FAO after that date will be included in a supplement. The present Directory however, includes only those experts identified by Member Governments whose information has been verified within the country and submitted through IOC and SCOR. The lists supplied by SCOR and IOC were used for processing, with the exception of the input from the U.S.A. Which was provided on magnetic tape and used directly to generate the U.S. segment. The differences in format between this and the other sections of the Directory have been minimized as far as possible. However, the tape format supplied by the U.S.A. Allowed for more then two specializations per persons, a discrepancy which has been reproduced; also , a list of 18 U.S. Experts bypassed during the computer processing is included on page 280.The International Directory of Marine Scientists is one of several services provided through the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System (ASFIS), jointly sponsored by FAO and IOC, to assist scientists and administrators to establish contacts and to obtain the information which may help to plan and execute their research programmes.
