Abstract | In response to the concerns of aquatic biologists and regulatory authorities, the potential effects of organosilicon compounds on the aquatic environment were reviewed. The scientific evidence of the environmental pathways, the pollution potential and persistence, the toxicity , and the bioaccumulation potential in freshwater and marine species at different trophic levels is evaluated. It is concluded that the low levels of toxicity to aquatic life forms, and the substantial absence of bioaccumulation potential, demonstrate that organosilicon compounds present no significant threat to the aquatic environment. |
