Abstract | In this paper the current situation of commercial bivalve aquaculture in Brazil is presented. The national production reached approximately 14 900 tonnes in 2005 with the state of Santa Catarina generating 95 percent of the total output. Other states contributing to the production are Espirito Santo (2,62 percent), São Paulo (1,14 percent), Paraná (0,91 percent) and Rio de Janeiro (0,19 percent), located in the south and southeast of the country. The main species cultured are the brown mussel, Perna perna, the pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, and to a lesser extent the mangrove oyster, Crassostrea rhizophorae and the scallop Nodipecten nodosus. Efforts to develop bivalve culture are found in eight northeastern states, but only on a small-scale, hence the production is not reflected in the official statistics. The seed production, grow-out techniques, processing and commercialization, institutional and environmental aspects and future prospects are discussed. |
