Abstract
Ship berthing is usually an unsteady process, in which the ship undergoes a lateral motion at low speed. Especially for large ships berthing in a harbor, the shallow water effects on the hydrodynamic force may be remarkable. In this case, it is necessary to take the shallow water effects into account. The focus of this paper is placed on the lateral hydrodynamic force on a ship undergoing unsteady berthing in shallow water. The viscous flow and hydrodynamic force are calculated by applying an unsteady RANS code with two different turbulent models. A Wigley hull is taken as example for the numerical research. The numerical results are presented and compared with the experimental results and other numerical results published in literature. Through the present study, an effective numerical method for simulation of the viscous flow around a ship in unsteady berthing motion in shallow water is established.
