Abstract
Comprehensive model tests were carried out in a shallow water towing tank equipped with a computer controlled planar motion mechanism in order to determine the open water characteristics of several rudders, including the rudder belonging to an Esso Osaka model. An alternative, non-stationary lest method was introduced which can lead to a reduction of the number of experiments required for determining a rudder's open water characteristics. It was observed that non-stationary phenomena may occur in the transition zone between flow characterised by circulation and lift and flow dominated by viscous effects.
