Abstract
A design of a closed recirculating fish culture system is described with a 98% recycle ration. An up-flow and a RDC filter are combined for biological water treatment. The up-flow filter is used for mineralization and nitrogen elimination and the RDC type filter for additional nitrification, before the water returns to the fish tanks stocked with trout. A pilot plant and a scaled up unit are compared. Calculated production capacity is 52.5 kg trout/m³ system water/year with a requirement of make-up water of 60 L/kg weight increase. In the pilot unit, differences in growth of trout compared to fish reared in a flow through system were of lesser importance. Nitrate nitrogen concentration can be stabilized in the range of 5-10 mg/L during a long term run of 18 months.
