Abstract
A common trout feed (NF) and an extruded high energy feed (HEF) with high digestibility were fed to two groups of rainbow trout. Oncorhynchus mykiss for 184 days under comparable pond conditions. The effluents for both ponds were rather similar for parameters such as 02, BOD5 and N03- and, with certain restrictions, unfiltered and filtered total phosphorus. Ammonia was higher in the effluents from trout fed with normal pellets, while orthophosphate was lower. The computed daily pond effluents for one ton of trout of BOD5, NH2 and unfiltered total phosphorus were lower with the HEF group as were all parameters when calculated for kg growth gain. The increase in biomass was higher in trout fed the high energy feed. This group also obtained a better growth rate, feed conversion ratio, feed utilization economy and protein efficient ratio, but had a negligibly lower fat content in the edible tissue and an apparently weaker condition after 2.5 h transport.
