Abstract
    Energy metabolism at maintenance and different production levels was studied in Cyprinus carpio and Oreochromis niloticus. A combination of comparative slaughter technique and measurement of oxygen consumption was followed during experimentation. Maintenance feeding-level, caused a continuous decline in availability of energy for metabolic purposes (q) in growing fish of both species. Unlike carp, rising energy supply had no effect on composition of weight gain in tilapia. Higher energy supply in carp was linked to increased lipid retention end utilization of metabolizable energy above maintenance (Kg ). In both species heat production reached a certain plateau. which could not be exceeded by further supply of energy. These plateaus correspond to the highest efficient energy utilization (ktot), but in comparison to tilapia, a higher energy intake is necessary to reach maximum heat production in carp.
