Abstract | The results obtained in the rearing of Penaeus monodon Fabricius in Italy, using semi-intensive methods are described. Following a preliminary experiment in 1985, 150000 postlarvae (PL8) of Penaeus monodon were imported from Malaysia in 1986 with the aim of testing the growth of the species using semi-intensive methods in the thermic conditions of southern ltaly. The experiment took place at an intensive fish farming plant in a pond of about 1 ha fed bywater coming both from the intensive rearing of eels Anguilla anguilla and from a semi-intensive pond for the rearing of sea bream Sparus aurata. After a preliminary period of quarantine carried out in 2.5m³ glass resin tanks (functioning on a closed system) and a rearing period in a 50m³ concrete tanks, 31 500 juveniles with an average weight of 0.21g each were released into the rearing pond. After 113 days of rearing 465kg of shrimps were collected weighing on average 16.94g each. The final survival was 87.1% with a food conversion of 3.45. |
