Abstract | POG, DOG and sedimentation were studied during the spring phytoplankton bloom from April 27 to May 25. POG in the euphotic layer consisted largely of phytoplankton, maximum values of 0.5 mg·dm-3 were found at the height of a bloom of the colonial microflagellate Corymbellus aureus. DOG increased during the waxing of this C. aureus bloom to a maximum of 2.4 mg·dm-3 after the bloom. Data indicate that most of the primary produced material ended up in the DOG pool. Sedimentation accounted only for small losses from the euphotic zone: ca 1% of the daily primary produced material sank out, except at the end of the C. aureus bloom when values increased to almost 10%. Daily sedimentation amounted to no more than 0.1 to 1% of the amounts present in the euphotic layer of POG, chlorophyll and phytoplankton cells. |
