Abstract
Replies to an EIFAC questionnaire have been briefly summarized tot provide background information for the symposium. They show that the systems of water quality classification widely used in Europe are often based upon complementary chemical ans physical criteria and are required mainly for pollution control, sometimes in relation tot fisheries. The pollutants a system is designed tot detect vary between countries. Within countries systems used tend to be uniform, but there are differences between countries in the organism and biological criteria used for classification purposes; invertebrates ans saprobic and biotic indices are most commonly adopted. Updating of the classification and of the system of classification is proposed in several countries.
