Abstract
The role of the benthos as a site of nutrient regeneration and the importance of the benthic nutrient contribution to pelagic primary production in the innermost part of the west-Norwegian coastal zone is evaluated. Based on data for sedimentation of organic marter and the total primary production in five west-Norwegian fjords, the maximum regeneration rate of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus from the sediment surface and the new production (primary production due to allochthonous nutrient supply) were calculated. Two independent estimates of new production rates gave similar results and corresponded to 29-50% of the annual total primary production. A significant linear relationship was found between new production and the flux of organic carbon out of the euphotic zone. It is suggested that new production can be estimated by measuring the sedimentation of organic material at the bottom of the euphotic zone. The phytoplankton biomass potentially derived from maximum nutrient contributions by the benthos, comprised on average 58% of the annual new production. Benthic nutrient release thus can represent a major source of allochthonous nutrients for phytoplankton growth in the innermost part of the west-Norwegian coastal zone.
