Abstract
The knowledge of idoteas along the Belgian coast is rather poor. Recent findings are scarce. The author reports therefore some observations on 5 species occurring along the Belgian coast. ldotea pelagica and ldotea granulosa are common residents between tidemarks. They are living on the breakwaters around Oostende. ldotea pelagica Jives their in fairly great numbers between the mussels. ldotea granulose is less abundant and lives on Polysiphonia nigrescens. Numerous ldotea emarginata and ldotea baltica were found washed ashore on a beach at Oostende on 24 September 1994. They were living between cast-up waste and remains of various marine organisms, mainly Lanice conchiglea and Alcyonidium. As they are scavengers, they were probably feeding upon it.Finally the author reports a finding of 1 specimen of ldotea neglecta. The specimen was collected from a piece of driftwood cast ashore on the Lombardsijde beach. The wood was covered with Lepas anatifera. Reports of ldotea emarginata and ldotea neglecta are scarce from Belgium and the Netherlands. Their occurence is probably more frequent than thought. Due to their mode of life- they are mainly living sublitorally -they have often been overlooked.
