Abstract | This study looks at improving the understanding of the hydrodynamics of the Rhine-Meuse plume (the region of the Dutch coastal zone influenced by the discharge of the rivers Rhine and Meuse), thus providing the basis for future water quality models for optimal management of marine resources. The Rhine-Meuse is of ecological importance as the largest river discharging into the North Sea, in terms of both flow rate and the associated fluxes of nutrients and pollutants. We outline the use of a 3D hydrodynamice model to describe and explain a number of physical processes relating to the salinity structure of the Rhine-Meuse plume. |
