Abstract
    This paper considers the topics of hydrodynamic interaction load effects and ship motion control system designassociated with maneuvering a ship around a floating object such as an offshore cargo storage facility in deep and calmwater under the influence of a uniform current. In particular, the hydrodynamic interaction loads in the time domain areestimated by using generalized Tuck and Newman theory [1]. These loads are estimated within the combined seakeepingand maneuvering model of Skejic and Faltinsen [5, 6] and Skejic [7]. The applicability of the model is discussed from ahydrodynamic point of view and also evaluated through numerical simulations. In addition, a novel ship motion controlsystem is developed to make it possible for a ship to safely maneuver around moored or drifting objects despite beingexposed to significant hydrodynamic interaction effects. The motion control system consists of a guidance system whichinstructs a course control system which subsequently commands the ship rudder to enable circular path following aroundany specified object. Two close-proximity maneuvering scenarios are simulated using a scaled „MARINER‟ ship and ahexagonal prism-shaped cargo storage facility which is stationary or drifting under the influence of a uniform current.The hydrodynamic interaction effects and effectiveness of the maneuvers are then investigated for these scenarios.Finally, aspects concerning the marine inspection operations are discussed from the perspective of navigational safety.
