Abstract
We introduce the concept of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for the analysis of ocean acoustic data. The original EMD algorithm is modified by introducing a bandpass filter into the process to constrain the so-called intrinsic mode functions to fall within the frequency range of the input data. When applied to the impulse response of a shallow-water acoustic waveguide some of these functions are seen to be similar to predicted propagation modes.
