Abstract | With 120,000 inhabitants and an area of 140km2 Cubatão (São Paulo State, Brazil) qualifies as an urban area. The mangrove of this coastal area occupies 136,538m2 but only 40% is in good condition. Many anthropogenic activities cause pollution, but despite these environmental impacts, the region is important for its biodiversity. The aim of this research is to study the evolution of the urban mangrove forest in Cubatão between 1962 and 2008.Imagery of 1962, 1994 and 2008 was used to detect the evolution of different human activities in the mangrove forests of Cubatão. Irregular human occupations and motorways constituted the main changes in the the mangrove. Within this on-going research we display the manual interpretation of changes, but GlS-aided analysis of the historical series ofLandsat and aerial images will quantify the reduction of mangrove area in this urban site. On the field, characterization of the mangrove vegetation under different levels of human pressure will be done. Considering that the quality of life of local coastal populations in Brazil depend on mangrove ecosystem health, it is important to recognize that studies using different spatiotemporal scales may help local decision-makers and integrated coastal zone management. |
