Abstract
During November-December 1996 and September 1997, more than 140 groundwater samples have been collected trom the wells and piezometers in Bou-Areg plain (near Nador, north-eastern Morocco). The samples have been analysed tor the major cations and anions. The salinity of the groundwater varies from less than 1000 µS/cm (20 °C) in the central, south-eastern and western part of the study area, 10 more than 10000 µS/cm (20°C) in certain areas as the coastal zone and the area of Selouane. The lower concentrations have been attributed to freshening phenomena due to two factors:-rainfall recharge in the mountains; -infillration of irrigation water.Different water types have been determined and the influence of irrigation and regional-rainfall recharge is reflected in the major part of the study area. The freshening evolution in time and in space is modelled in a cross-section.
