Abstract | A study of the relationship between the size of phytoplankton cells and the vertical water movement shows that the small cells are mostly found where there is a downward flow, while larger cells occur more where there is an upward flow. The size of the phytoplankton cells is thus directly related to the upward component of water movement. Data have been collected in the central Pacific along longitude 174°W. |
