Abstract
This chapter is concerned with relating the environment in which a proxy indicator accumulates to tidal datum, known as the reference water or tide level. Very few proxy indicators accumulate at mean sea level (MSL), and so a correction to a common datum is nearly always necessary. Land survey datums have been developed in many countries, but the most useful datum to define is local MSL. This chapter describes the methods used by field scientists in locations close to tide gauges and in remote locations to define the water levels and tidal datum used in field-based research.
