Abstract
This note reports the find of a Northern Fulmar with clipped primaries in Shetland on 31 Jan 2012. To the best of our knowledge, the only place within the North Sea where primaries are clipped to avoid double counts in beached bird surveys is The Netherlands. Some 265 Northern Fulmars had been recorded in Dutch BBS in Dec 2011-Jan 2012, many of which were left on the beach with clipped wings. Even though this is no proof of a find of a bird that was ashore first in The Netherlands and later in Shetland, such as secenario is far from unlikely. Perhaps we should consider the use of diagnostic markers in each of the countries where beached bird surveys are conducted to be able to document cases with more certainty.
