Abstract
The development of Pecten maximus is shortly outlined. Shell characters of the prodissoconch as well as the dissoconch stages of European Pectinidae are given. Identification of prodissoconchs is very difficult, although not impossible. Differences in size, colour and minor differences in shape are helpfull in this respect. Dissoconchs show more distinctive character features, and are easier to identify.
