Abstract | Algal turfs are emerging as one of the most common and widespread configurations of shallow temperate and tropical reefs, being expected to transform reef dynamics and ecosystem services. Yet, we still have a vague understanding of how turfs will affect ecosystem functions, and which ecosystem properties will change or be maintained. This thesis explores how the rise of turfs in temperate marine forests and tropical coral reefs affects four important ecosystem properties: habitat structure, primary and secondary production, and sediment dynamics. |
