Abstract
Mangroves provide vital economic and ecological benefits to coastal communities through their role in fisheries enhancement. However, mangrove forest extent worldwide continues to decline due to land conversion for a number of human uses. The loss of mangrove forests, and subsequent potential loss of ecosystem services, puts the future of sustained mangrove fishing at risk. How mangrove fishing communities will be affected by such changes in mangrove forests and their ecosystem service provision is not well understood. This chapter describes the challenges facing the management of mangrove fisheries and the state of knowledge regarding the potential pressures mangrove fisheries will face in the future. These include human and climate-induced changes to mangrove fishery linkages, as well as the social factors influencing resource use in mangrove fishing communities.
