Abstract | This chapter introduces anemonefishes as emerging marine model systems for experimental biology and ecology. It covers geographical distribution, phylogeny, anatomy and genomics as well as embryonic and larval development. Unique features, such as the symbiosis with sea anemones, social organization and hermaphroditism are also discussed. Furthermore, this chapter covers tools available for anemonefish research and includes details on husbandry and rearing. Finally, a few research areas which can be advanced employing anemonefishes are described, but hopefully readers will be inspired to come up with their own questions. One of the aims of this chapter is to encourage integrated studies, for example, linking ecological field studies with lab-based evo-devo approaches. |
