Abstract | Samples of the widely distributed sand goby Pomatoschistus minutus have been investigated genetically from seven localities in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the western Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea. Levels of genetic diversity and differentiation were assessed with cellulose acetate (CAGE) gel electrophoresis for nine enzyme systems. Pair-wise FsT values between samples point to a reduction or even absence of gene flow between the Adriatic and the other sarnples, including the western Mediterranean Sea (multi-locus FST = 0.321; multi-locus GST = 0.287). The differentiation between the Adriatic sample and all the others was of the same order of magnitude as between P. minutus and its closest relative, P. lozanoi. The sample from the Adriatic Sea was differentiated from the other samples mainly by allele frequency differences at the lactate dehydrogenase loci LDH-A* and LDH-C* (CAGE). At the sampling sites outside the Adriatic Sea the sand goby shows the typical features of a marine fish with a high level of gene flow and a low degree of genetic differentiation, which is roughly ten times lower than when the Adriatic P. minutus are included (multi-locus FST = 0-019; multi-locus GST = 0.028). |
