Abstract | Suspended sediment transport, or sediment transport in general, is a massively important issue to take into account when dealing with hydraulics or hydraulic engineering. Continuous measurement technologies, such as optical backscatter sensors, exist but are indirect. This implies that their output is only usable when calibrated, a time-consuming and tiresome procedure. In an attempt to resolve this, Flanders Hydraulics Research has a physical scale model, the calibration tank, in which instruments can be calibrated. Earlier research concluded that, although the scale model worked for calibration for loam, calibration for sand was not successful because the sand particles settled too quickly. This research looks to resolve this by studying the influencing parameters on optical backscatter sensor output to get a better understanding of the complex SSC-turbidity relation. The goal is to find a conversion relation between sand and an alternative material. Subsequently, calibration of an optical instrument for this alternative material and other sediments will be executed in the calibration tank. |
