Abstract
The Vlaams-Nederlands Schelde Commissie (VNSC) asked Deltares to conduct scale model research in order to establish the contractual requirements for the levelling process of the new lock in Terneuzen. The aim of the scale model tests is to determine the forces acting on a ship during levelling and during the lock-exchange process, including the forces due to a density difference between the Western Scheidt and the Ghent-Terneuzen canal. A preliminary test series performed in November 2015 at Deltares was constrained to testing limited water level conditions in the available scale model built for the new sea lock in IJmuiden. In the present study, the IJmuiden scale model was modified to represent the main dimensions of the new lock in Terneuzen at a scale 1:40, allowing testing a wider range of water level conditions and including a model of the reference design of Terneuzen lock gate, with gate openings as levelling system. This report describes the setup and results from these scale model tests.
