Abstract
Four experiments were conducted in which six species of bivalve molluscs were reared for periods ranging from 10 weeks to over 2 years in a recirculatirlg seawater system. Shellfish were fed defined, non-axenic algal diets and had no access to any other food. The diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, was shown to be a poor food for all species of bivalves tested while another diatom, Thallassiosira pseudonana, proved to be a good food. T. pseudonana yielded growth comparable to that of a four-part diet of Carteria chuii, Croomonas salina, Isochrysis galbana, and T. pseudonana when fed to Crassostrea virginica, Crassostrea gigas, and Tapes semidecussata while the four-part diet was superior with Ostrea edulis and Mytilus edulis. Mercenaria mercenaria fed the four-part diet grew to marketable size in 1 year as compared to 3-5 years for the species in nature.
