Abstract
    Soluble organic matter in sediment porewater from a mangrove community increased during the dry season and decreased in the wet part of the year. The biological activity of soluble material extracted from the sediment was measured using the growth yield of two diatoms from the genus Amphora as an indicator of the presence of assimilable organic carbon. Although, on occasion the extracts promoted the heterotrophic growth of Amphora coffeaeformis var. perpusilla, more often they caused growth inhibition. The diatoms used in the biological assay were euryhaline, shade-adapted and facultatively heterotrophic.
