Abstract
    In the biochemical cycle of a fish pond, in which both natural and artificial foodsare available to the fish, aquatic vegetation is indispensable. Some plants, however, areso prolific as to invade the entire pond and therefore require regular control, the mainaim being to allow phytoplankton growth. In long-neglected ponds costly cleaning and dredging become necessary. In pisciculture the control of aquatic vegetation must be a regular operation.In Europe biological control offers on1y limited possibilities, another means of control being the introduction of exotic fish. As for mechanical method, power clearing of weeds, indispensable for rationalization of the work in fairly large fish ponds, is commonly and effectively practiced to control marshy vegetation. Another method for control of the latter, which is slowly coming into use, is the application of herbicides. Chemical control of floating and submerged vegetation has made real progress in recent years, although many problems remain to be solved.
