Abstract
After a reference to the deductions which may be drawn from distributions of natural properties in the sea, a review is given of the use of tracers, particularly fluorescent dyes, in diffusion experiments. Methods of analysing the data so as to derive parameters of the diffusive processes are described. Several particular investigations are mentioned and an account is given of certain general laws which have been derived empirically to represent the dependence of the eddy diffusion coefficients and other parameters on the scale of the phenomena involved. While these laws enable au order-of-magnitude estimate to be made of the diffusion processes in a given situation, a more precise estimate requires a knowledge of local currents, current shear, stability and other features. Some recent work is described which is aimed at clarifying the dependence of turbulent diffusion on physical properties of the environment.
