Abstract
The present work is trying to stop the controversy about the origin of chitin in sponges. From measurements made on samples of different ages and textures, it appears that endobiotic organisms are playing an important part in the production of chitin found in sponges. Moreover, the precise determination of the biomass of these organisms in samples allows to explain the total amount of measured chitin, which indicates that the origin of this chitin is strictly exogenous.
