Abstract | Within Flanders, the coastal dunes are an important habitat for terrestrial snails. A total inventory of the coastal zone includes 77 species, approximately three quarters of the total number in Flanders. This high proportion is also reflected in coastal specificity. Nearly 10% of the Flemish land snail species is essentially restricted to the coastal area. To a large extent, this pattern can be attributed to the calcareous dune soils, although drought is also an important environmental characteristic. As an adaptation to this stress factor for example, thick white shells are strikingly abundant within coast-specific Helicidae.Land snail fauna has changed drastically during the past century. In particular, the expansion of Atlantic and Mediterranean species is striking. This trend can be attributed to natural expansion of species' areas but human effects probably play an important role as well. In this respect, the establishment of a number of species seems to coincide with the World Wars. |
